Important lobby

Kine Per week told you « The powerful ‘crooks slide out’ is peopled that have a colorful range off important and you may arresting letters, and they, skilfully manipulated because of the blogger and you may director, permit the film so you’re able to tread liquid efficiently. It is merely for the finish so it actually starts to fall apart, nevertheless the slap-up finale rescues it on the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and wisely dialogued, it has no higher issue for the way of life off their incredibly unsightly term. » [ 8 ]

Monthly Motion picture Bulletin said « The film movements within an instant rate, this new talk is smooth and you may characterisations fundamentally productive. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) did at the gambling establishment and you will old a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, the newest cast’s suavely managed body language away from love and you may possibility, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will fashionably assertive photo (along with his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle an invisible antique of your own style. » [ 10 ]

While the area pursue a common trend, the brand new characterizations is actually fresh and performances good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog try terse and you will relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney touching. Unusual cam bases come along once in a while so you can heighten appeal and you can momentarily arrest the eye. Strong teamplay of the Robert Rossen, increasing because the director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, completely new blogger and you may member producer, as well as helps with making it a delicate development. » [ eleven ]

Its primarily a point of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces fashionably if you are a large cast out-of stars and you may actresses offer him classic service. Evelyn Keyes plays the great nothing lady whom brings about this new best in your and you may Ellen Received is the sleek and slinky vixen just who will get him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy given that villain and Lee J. Cobb does a new in a position concert tour as a tired police inspector just who in the end closes the actual situation.
